An aid worker with Habitat for Humanity Northern Ireland has been seriously injured in a bus crash in Kenya. Mary Morgan (61) was seriously injured when the brakes of the minibus that was transporting them failed as the driver attempted to round a bend on the winding roads outside Nairobi.

Mary was one of 13 Habitat for Humanity staffers aboard the minibus which crashed enroute to a project site in Kathiami at 7.40am on 7 July. Five other staff suffered minor injuries while the remaining seven largely escaped injury.

Initial reports suggest that the bus was locally hired to transport staff to and from the project site.

Comment: While transport owner/operators are clearly responsible for maintaining their vehicles in a safe operating condition aid organizations are also responsible for ensure that the vehicles they hire meet their organization’s safety standards. It is incumbent upon the organization to do their own safety inspection before hiring the vehicle.
